Migraine is a chronic neurological disease that characterises by recurrent episodes of headache associated with nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Migraines are very prevalent and affect 1 in 7 Europeans. They can be debilitating and costly, with an estimated cost of €125 billion in Europe each year due to lost productivity and healthcare. There are currently no cures for migraine and existing treatments provide only symptomatic relief.
TARA is a €6mln project that aims at developing data-driven personalised therapies and prevention strategies to control migraine attacks, while avoiding the side effects of presently available prophylactic drugs.
Skein works together with patients and carers, as well as other healthcare professionals, to develop tools for delivering personalised treatments based on patient data collected via smartphone apps. This could help improve compliance with treatment plans by tailoring them according to each individual’s needs and circumstances.
Personalised medicine for migraine is based on the identification of early markers that indicate who, when and how will be affected by migraine. The researchers want to use biomarkers to identify a single or combination of factors that are suitable for early diagnosis, but also for the determination of the patient’s disease stage and progression.
