The Challenge

Toothscan is a smart device that monitors and analyses the health of teeth. It scans each tooth and intelligently sends information about the user’s heath to the dentist via a bespoke mobile app.

At the first stage of the prototype development Tesla Studios, the company behind Toothscan, aimed to quickly define a razor-sharp positioning and become a monopolist in a fast-expanding sector of preventive dental healthcare that is driven by close patient-dentist collaboration. Additionally, they have been looking to raise a multi-million-dollar seed investment round to support fast scale up and market entry.

The client’s team was facing the following challenges:

  • Find the optimal way to design the product and prioritise features;
  • Close investment deals under tight timelines pressure;
  • Align the startup resources with the current and prospective investors’ expectations;
  • Plan demand;
  • Plan operational budget.
The process

Skein conducted a market research as part of an ambitious launch strategy, built financial projections, and evaluated the impact of various scenarios on customer adoption and business success.

Research and analytics

First, we gathered information about the founders’ business goals and discussed various scenarios for growth. As the next stage, Skein applied proprietary information gathering tools to model customer demand, current and future competition moves, and external economic and regulatory factors.

Project planning: financials and user demand

At the next stage, we built a mathematical model, dashboard, and visualisations to gauge possible threats and opportunities and provided the client team with this decision-making tool, as well as data analytics for investors.

The financial projections covered:

    • A model based on scenarios and economic assumptions;
    • Five-year financial projections;
    • A five-year Profit & Loss plan, by month;
    • User adoption scenarios: work through various models of the company development and growth based on given assumptions, with factors such as fundraising milestones, marketing investments, conversion rates etc.;
    • Sensitivity analysis: evaluated what variables have the biggest impact on startup financial model;
    • Break-even analysis;
    • Cash flow analysis.

Deliverable format: financial model and analysis in MS Excel file.

Investor-ready two-page investment plan

At this stage we worked closely with the client to produce materials necessary for presenting the market opportunity to the investors and negotiating the terms:

  • Market research: Define the market potential and user demand;
  • Key industry trends and indicators;
  • Factors that impact demand growth and estimates;
  • Competition, ecosystem;
  • Product summary, financials summary; team highlights;
  • Plan and milestones;
  • Custom design for investment summary.
